Interventional Pain Management

Interventional Pain Managment, Pain Medicine or Algology, is a branch of medicine involving management of pain (to stop, reduce or treat the pain and to treat the condition causing pain) with the use of various non – surgical minimally – invasive techniques.

Sometimes it is supplemented with pharmacological and other approaches to compose an individualized comprehensive pain management program.

Pain is a sensation triggered in the nervous system and is an important alert to diagnosing a problem. It can be categorized into:

  1. Accute Pain Managment - The pain transmitted by nociceptors is termed as acute/nociceptive pain. Such a pain usually resolves when the causative factor of pain has been resolved.

  2. Chronic Pain – The pain that persists even after healing or even after providing any specific cure for the condition which triggered the pain, is termed as chronic pain A common misconception about pain is that one has to live with it because either pain has no cure or may have to undergo knife or doesn’t want to bear side effects of painkiller medicine. Untreated pain can have a derogatory effect on the patients quality of life moreover, it can lead to many other problems ranging from hypertension, depression or anxiety neurosis or may lead to suicidal tendencies. Interventional Pain Management – Interventional Pain Management is a branch of Pain Medicine that identifies the pain generator i.e. the anatomical structure in the body which causes the pain and works by taking away the pain from the pain generator.  It is a method of managing chronic pain with the techniques apart from those used in the management of conventional pain management such as medication and exercise and surgery. Thus all such non – surgical, minimally – invasive techniques /procedures which intervene in the body and thereby manage pain are called Interventional Pain Management techniques. Such techniques include many diagnostic and therapeutic pain intervention practices designed specifically for identification of origin of pain and its treatment accordingly.

These pain relieving procedures are done with the help of X-rays, ultrasound or CT scan and minimal amount of radio-opaque dye (Under Fluproscopic Guidance). The other major advantage of these interventional pain procedures are that they are percutaneous, do not require extensive hospital stay and the patient may return back to his routine after 1 day. Besides, these procedures work out to be more economical.
