Sehgal Minimal Access Surgery Training Institute (SMASTI) is the academic wing of SNH. The training is imparted under the aegis of International Association of Minimal Access Surgeons (IAMAS). SMASTI offers minimal access surgery training in various specialities like laparoscopic and general surgery, gynaecology and hysteroscopy, upper and lower GI endoscopy. It also offers Residency Programs to already practicing minimal access surgeons, who want to enhance their skills and competence. Laparoscopic surgery is industry and technology driven. At SNH, the candidates are taught in detail about the latest hand instruments, both disposable and reusable, access instruments, and optical instruments including different types of camera systems. CMAS (Certificate Course in Minimal Access Surgery) or basic training course in Laparoscopic Surgery will start with introduction to minimal access surgery, its advantage and disadvantages. The candidates will learn the ergonomics, task analysis and engineering - the three pillars of performing safe laparoscopic surgery. The students will acquire knowledge and develop skills about the following:
Laparoscopic tower and various instruments placed on it like different types of camera systems, telescopes, monitors, light sources, light cables, insufflators and energy sources.
Different reusable and disposables instruments including verees needle, trocars, cannula and ports.
Sterilization technique of reusable instruments.
Various access technique and top gun drill exercises for getting trained in bimanual hand eye coordination, ambidexterity and depth perception.
Scientific basis of ports placement.
Laparoscopic extra corporeal and intra corporeal suturing knotting techniques and hands on training on different energy sources.

FMAS (Fellowship Course in Minimal Access Surgery) or advanced training course in laparoscopic surgery will be helpful in learning intra corporeal and extra corporeal suturing, knotting with ipsilateral port position, tissue retrieval techniques and port closure techniques. Students will learn about various video capture devices and software used in movie making and video editing of laparoscopic procedures. In advanced course, the surgeon will learn in OT envirorment - laparoscopic appendectomy, laparoscopic cholecystectomy, laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair TAPP & TEP, MIPH or stapler haemorrhoidectomy and ventral hernia repair with laparoscopic IPOM technique. In advanced course the gynaecologist will learn in OT envirorment laparoscopic sterilization, laparoscopic salpingectomy, laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy, laparoscopic salpingo-oophorectomy, laparoscopic ovarian drilling, laparoscopic assisted vaginal hysterectomy (LAVH) and total laparoscopic hysterectomy (TLH). Gynaecologists will also learn the instrument used and various procedures done in diagnostic and operative hysteroscopy. The paediatric surgeon will learn laparoscopic appendectomy, laparoscopic repair of diaphragmatic hernia, laparoscopic hernia repair and laparoscopic orchidopexy. The urologist will learn laparoscopic varicocelectomy and laparoscopic nephrectomy.

Residency programme at SNH is for post graduate surgeons, gynaecologists, paediatric surgeons and urologists for intensive training under direct supervision of the consultant. Residency program is also available to surgeons and physician interested in upper and lower GI endoscopy. The candidate must have completed the FMAS training of SMASTI or any other equivalent course. This programme covers the clinical, theoretical and practical aspects of the teaching. The candidate has to follow the laid down time-table and has to interact with the patient. The candidate has to actively participate in the academic activities of the department. The trainee can pursue the residency programme as per his / her requirement for 3 months, 6 months or one year. The residency programme is available to the candidate in two formats.
MCI Registration (permanent/ temporary) is mandatory for doing residency programme with clinical responsibility. Candidates who choose the program with clinical responsibilities will be paid a monthly stipend of Rs. 30,000/- for Indian / SAARC Doctors and USD 600/- for foreign nationals/NRI’s.

Hysteroscopy is a fundamental skill in the field of gynaecology today. The essential goal of this course is to give satisfactory information to perform safe hysteroscopic surgeries, understanding the distension media, distension equipment’s and energy sources. This course would incorporate diagnostic hysteroscopy and operative hysteroscopy including polypectomy, adhesiolysis, myomectomy and endometrial resection. Extraordinary attention would be placed on instrumentation, role of hysteroscopy in infertility along with anticipation of complications and their management.
The multidisciplinary approach in the treatment of patients these days is making the thin line of specialist privileges disappear. The lifestyle disorders like PUS, GERD, obesity, substance & alcohol abuse constitutes the vast majority of patients visiting surgeons, physicians and gastroenterologists. The upper and lower GI endoscopy is a very important modality in diagnosis and treatment of these lifestyle disorders. This course will cater to the needs of those confident surgeons and physicians who want to be completely involved and in control of the treatment of their patients. In this course they will learn, the diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of the upper and lower GI endoscopy. The trainee will learn the video endoscopes design, handling, cleaning and disinfection. They will learn the basic upper and lower GI endoscopy techniques including preparation and pre medications of the patients. They will learn indications, contraindications and complications of the upper and lower GI endoscopy. They will learn interpretations of endoscopic findings, tissue biopsy and its handling. They will learn techniques of endoscopic haemostasis, esophageal variceal ligation, hemoclipping, foreign body removal, endoscopic dilatation, polypectomy, PEG and many more including ERCP.
