Hysteroscopic Polypectomy

Endometrial polyps are growths of the endometrium which is the inner lining of uterus. Polyps can cause pain and irregular bleeding. They are usually benign but still need to be removed to treat the symptoms and also for biopsy to exclude malignancy. These can be removed completely under vision using a hysteroscope. This is a scarless surgery as there is no cut.

Hysteroscopic surgery is performed using a hysteroscope (a type of endoscope) that is connected with optical fibers and equipped with a camera which relays the image onto a video screen. The tip of the hysteroscope is inserted inside vagina and gently moved through the cervix into the uterus. Fluid is introduced into the uterine cavity to lift apart the walls of the uterus. The polyps are removed using scissors or resectoscope.

Hysteroscopic polypectomy is a day care procedure and the patient can go home the same day after surgery.
